This blog specifically talk about situation where leaders do not respect their reportees.
In todays world where team engagement is far more important to get the best performance from team.
As a leader, it’s your responsibility to maintain a positive team environment and boost morale. Gone those days where boss is always right. In the new era we need more leaders to succeed rather than bosses.
Below story tries to tell the how boss behaves and leader beaves, given same worst case scenario.
BOSS:
“On a fine day, during the daily standup meeting, a leader finds out that one of the specific issue which team never looked into it. He questions the team about the status, sience it was a new task that was not discussed earlier, team do not responded with any right answer. Boss gets angry showing disrespectfully ask team members that what are we doing so many days? you guys are not serious about the work, their cannot be any excuses for this and this is not at all expected..! and he leaves the meeting in the middle.”
Teams reaction: “It was a new finding for us, all these days we were pressurized to some other tasks, and why suddenly he is asking status on something we never discussed earlier” All these days we worked day and night and this one thing we missed because of lack of time, we felt we are not recognized, we are working for success of team, we need guidance and we will do it”
LEADER:
“On a fine day, during the daily standup meeting, a leader finds out that one of the specific issue which team never looked into it. when he ask what are the priority tasks for the team, and then team responds explaining the task done so far and pending and what are priority. And this task was never in team’s task list. So leader sets a new priority to the team, explaining them how important this task is and clearly sets the goal for the team and ask if it is doable and if you need any support”
Team reaction : “Team understood the task not being completed which was important, and the team gets clear understanding of their priority and goal, this did not heart their spirit and motivation
More than anger or money the motivation can help to get better productivity from team.
As a leader you should not blame the members for not doing things, if team members are not performing something is wrong with your leadership. Rather than bossing or showing anger on them asking right questions is important to get the understanding of situation, May be team is going through a different problem that is even new for leader. Below are few things what could have gone wrong :
- There is no priority set for the tasks
- The task was never listed.
- The team was never new the priority of task that was missed.
- Team is too much overloaded
- Team is facing new issues that requires more time to debug.
- Teams requires training
- The team does not have proper tools to track their tasks.
